Counsellors will all agree that our clients are our best teachers. Here are some of the things that I’ve learnt this year:
- Happiness is in the small things
- Being a parent or a carer is extremely difficult at times
- If you don’t make time for rest or looking after yourself, your body will soon let you know about it
- As a counsellor, I am often a ‘reminder-er’ of what you already know works for you
- The answer often starts will putting the kettle on and taking a 5 minute breather
- You’ll be laughing one minute and crying the next in counselling. All emotions are welcome and useful indicators of what you need to tend to within yourself
- Comparison to others zaps your joy
- Accepting all parts of yourself – the good and the bad – is a peaceful place
- Being authentically yourself is powerful and fulfilling
- Nothing changes if nothing changes. It’s the clients that do the work in between sessions that make the most progress.
